Hydroponics: A New Way to Become Self-Sufficient With the world's population growing, individuals are looking for solutions to combat hunger and become self-sufficient. The best option to address the issue is venturing new technique in planting.

The National Irrigation Administration has designated the greenhouse as an Irrigators' Association (IA) Model Farm. It is provided to the IA as a reward for the associations with the highest functionality rating across the country. Hydroponics is the ideal approach for a greenhouse; it can enhance production 3 to 10 times in a small space.

The NIA's front-line personnel should learn about hydroponics and its practices in order to aid our farmers with implementation. To help them attune this knowledge, the NIA Caraga conducted a 2-day seminar, facilitated by the Regional Office Institutional Development Unit with the help of the resource speaker, Estelito C. Bebit, Jr, Organic Agri Production NC II Adviser. The seminar was held at the Pavilion, Watergate Hotel, Butuan City on August 22-23, 2022.

22 Agencies Converge to Improve the Delivery

22 Agencies Converge to Improve the Delivery of Government Services Twenty-two (22) partner agencies, local government units, and representatives from the academe sector shared their plans and programs with the farmers during the Farmers and Inter-Agency Convergence Forum held at the Pavilion, Watergate, Butuan City on July 26, 2022.

The forum is a kick-off activity hosted by the National Irrigation Administration-Caraga to converge the agency’s plans and programs with the different agencies in order to harmonize the government’s goals and objectives that could effectively benefit the beneficiaries, particularly in the delivery of basic services.

Acting Regional Manager June Nathaniel S. Plaza, cited former President Rodrgio Roa Duterte’s assertion that agriculture is considered the backbone of the country’s economy. It forms the basis for food and nutrition security and provides raw materials for industrialization. These are the important factors that allow progress to take place in society. With that statement, it urges and challenges the agency to double its effort in focusing our attention on the farmers since they are our beneficiaries and the ones who belong to the agricultural sector.

At the end, the forum’s objectives to know and to update the agencies' plans and programs, roles and responsibilities of the different agencies, and gather communication from the agencies based on the farmers’ needs were attained, which made the convergence first meeting successful.

NIA Caraga joins the simultaneous tree planting

As the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) marks this year’s 59th founding anniversary, the NIA Caraga Regional Irrigation Office and Agusan del Norte-Surigao del Norte-Dinagat Islands (ASDI)-IMO collaborated on a tree planting activity as part of its lined-up activities for the month of June with the theme "Trees for Water Life 2022".

The "Greening the environment the NIA way" tree planting campaign is in support of the office's advocacy for the preservation of all watershed areas within NIA irrigation systems. During his speech, Acting Regional Manager Engr. June Nathaniel S. Plaza encouraged attendees to plant fruit-bearing trees, which will eventually generate income for the farmers, safeguard our watershed and help mitigate the impact of climate change. Forester Paul C. Boligor of LGU Cabadbaran presented a briefing on the proper way to plant trees to reduce mortality rates.

A total of 500 seedlings of mixed species of Narra, Dao, Rain Tree, Kamagong, and fruit trees were planted within the NIA area of management of the Cabadbaran Watershed in an effort to support the Rehabilitation and Protection of Water Resources Supporting Irrigation System (R&P WRSIS) Program of NIA and as part of the strategies/activities in the Cabadbaran Watershed 5-Year Watershed Management Plan (WMP).

The said activity was participated by NIA Caraga RIO, ASDI-IMO personnel and staff together with the representative from Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Agriculture, DENR PENRO Agusan del Norte, City LGU of Cabadbaran thru City ENRO, Irrigators Association and BLGU Calamba.
